How I Used ChatGPT to Build a Business Plan—And Wrote This Blog Too

Today I spoke with the business studies class at Whakatāne High School about something that’s reshaping the way we work: artificial intelligence. We looked at practical ways AI can help in business—from planning to marketing—and the students had some sharp questions.

This blog post is more than a recap. I’m writing it using the same tools I introduced today, including ChatGPT and a personalised GPT I’ve trained to help me write business content. And here’s the kicker: I used AI to build an entire business plan for a real venture—ManaFit—including a C-suite structure, brand strategy, and launch plan. If I can do it, so can you.

There’s a lot of noise about AI, but the real opportunity is in what it can do for you—right now. Whether you’re a student, entrepreneur, or business owner, AI tools like ChatGPT can give you speed, structure, and fresh ideas. Think of it as a teammate who can help brainstorm, plan, write, and even coach you through complex tasks. It won’t do the thinking for you—but it will help you move faster and more confidently.

For ManaFit, I used AI to:

  • Draft a complete business plan from scratch

  • Define the ideal customer and brand positioning

  • Build a virtual C-suite with clearly defined roles

  • Map out launch priorities, from website to pricing

I’ve also used the same GPT to write emails, pitch decks, and blog content (including this post).

Most people still think you need tech skills to use AI—but you don’t. If you can use Google or write a school report, you can start using ChatGPT right now. The magic is in how you ask. Give it context, be clear about what you want, and treat it like a collaborator. You’ll be surprised what comes back.

If you’re still at school, this is the perfect time to experiment. Ask ChatGPT something like:

  • “What’s a simple business idea for high school students in NZ?”

  • “Write a basic business plan for that idea”

  • “Help me create a pitch for my Young Enterprise project”

  • “What are 3 ways to market my idea on Instagram?”

Just start. The more you use it, the more useful it becomes.

Whether you’re starting a side hustle or planning a career in business, the ability to use AI will set you apart. You don’t need to become an expert—you just need to be open to experimenting.

The businesses that thrive tomorrow are being shaped today—often by people who are still in school, just like you.
