Beyond the Numbers – Wherewolf, Startups, and Staying Human at Scale

A Conversation with Ben Calder and Wulf Solter

Scaling a startup isn’t about chasing perfection. It’s about building momentum, staying focused, and surrounding yourself with the right people. I sat down with Ben Calder and Wulf Solter—co-founders of Wherewolf—to talk through the realities of building and growing tech in New Zealand.

What followed was part blueprint, part behind-the-scenes—an honest, practical look at startup life that felt more human than hype.

Whiteboards, Weddings, and Work That Matters

We kicked off with some light-hearted banter—Ben was fresh off wedding planning, and the parallels to startup execution weren’t lost on us: spreadsheets, late nights, and just trying to hold it all together.

From there, the conversation moved into their journey with Wherewolf, a platform built to solve real operational problems for adventure tourism businesses. The early days were all hustle—tight teams, fast decisions, and a relentless focus on product-market fit.

“You’ve got to move quickly—but not so fast that you lose sight of what’s really working.”

Governance That Drives Progress

The traditional quarterly boardroom setup? Not really their style. Ben and Wulf have built a governance rhythm that stays close to the action—weekly founder sessions, short feedback loops, and real-time decision-making.

“You need to be in the room with the people who are actually getting it done—not just reporting on it.”

Admin and follow-ups are now largely automated using AI-driven tools, giving them more headspace to focus on what matters: product and progress.

When the Calendar Becomes a Health Risk

Wulf opened up about a time when things nearly tipped over—back-to-back pitch events, relentless travel, and the personal toll of staying in high gear for too long.

“You can’t scale a business if you burn yourself out doing it.”

It was a raw but important reminder: sustainable growth means knowing when to push—and when to pause. Having a co-founder and support network that can call it out makes all the difference.

Clients, Clarity, and Keeping It Simple

They’ve learned the hard way that early client alignment is everything. Trying to build for everyone dilutes the product and adds complexity fast.

“It’s a trap to try and be everything to everyone. Be really clear on your lane.”

That mindset has kept Wherewolf focused—serving a clear market, with a repeatable solution that doesn’t drown in customisation or technical debt.

The Long View: From Product to Platform

While their focus remains on delivering value day-to-day, Ben and Wulf are already thinking ahead. They see potential to turn aggregated platform data into actionable insights for the broader industry—helping operators benchmark, improve, and grow.

But they’re not rushing it. First, the product has to nail the basics.

Final Thoughts: Substance Over Spin

This wasn’t a conversation full of buzzwords or bravado. Just two founders sharing what it really takes to build something from the ground up—and stay sane doing it.

“Real growth comes from solving actual problems—not just telling a good story.”
